Dudley Andrew “From Malraux to Bazin: the Psychology of Cinema and of Auteurs” Thursday February 17, 2011 12-1pm in Kresge 1-375 Dudley Andrew: R. Selden Rose Professor of Film and Comparative Literature Chairman, Comparative Literature Department Dudley Andrew is the R. Selden Rose Professor of Film and Comparative Literature. His areas of research include World Cinema (special attention to West Africa, Ireland, France, East Asia) Aesthetics (theories of the image, Film among the arts, adaptation) and French cinema and culture from the 1930s to today. His early books on film theory (The Major Film Theories, Concepts of Film Theory, and Andre Bazin, all published by Oxford Press) led to another set of books exploring key films and filmmakers: Film in the Aura of Art, a source book on Mizoguchi, a presentation of Breathless, and a “BFI classic” on Mizoguchi’s Sansho Dayu. His most ambitious works deal with France (Mists of Regret: Culture and Sensibility in Classic French Film -Princeton, 1995–and Popular Front Paris and the Poetics of Culture-Harvard, 2005). An overriding interest in visual aesthetics has resulted in an edited collection, The Image in Dispute: Art and cinema in the Age of Photography, and a contribution to Blackwell’s Manifesto series, What Cinema Is! Bazin’s Quest and its Charge. He has programmed films for The Guggenheim museum and served as a film festival judge. Recipient of the Guggenheim and several NEH fellowships, he was named Officier dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres by the French Cultural Ministry, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

New Year’s Resolutions to Consider

The following resolutions are inspired by blog submission suggestions made by Adrienne Allen, Claudia Alvis and Olimpia Hernandez. Thanks to all who made CHICATA Corner possible this year. Here’s to a great 2011!

1. Pay CHICATA dues on time.

2. Attend programs such as “Shop Talk” (Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 2:30-5:00).

3. Purchase Translation 3000 (25% discount)

4. Send pictures from the Holiday Party to John Bukacek.

5. Submit a blog entry or write a newsletter article.

6. Join a language group such as the French Interdisciplinary Group .

7. Be an advocate for foreign language education.

8. Attend a conference.

9. Take an exam.

10. Most importantly, continue to be ethical:

Dear CHICATA Colleagues:

A very important issue in interpreting and translating is that of ethics. In court, ethical violations can throw a trial or result in unintentional miscarriage of justice. In medicine they can cause very bad patient outcomes. In technical translation, ethical violations can cause fatal accidents.

The latest issue of the magazine Multilingual is almost entirely on ethics in the language industry, and it’s a good read. You can get an overview of the articles at this site:

However, most of the articles require a subscription if you want to read the whole thing. The magazine has something interesting in every issue, however, and it’s a very good resource for translator and interpreter education.

New Terminology Resource

Linguee, the terminology search engine once only exclusively for German translation, is now available for French, Portuguese, and Spanish!

www.linguee.com searches the whole web — but especially technical and patent documents — for terminology you request, and it shows you the terms side by side in context for you to choose. Sometimes the terms are good, sometimes less good, but you can see how other people have translated them, for better or for worse.

Thanks to CHICATA member Olimpia Hernandez for sharing this new development which she discovered through her Michigan colleagues!

Computer-Assisted Translation Tool Videos

The website TranslatorsTraining.com has made a wonderful set of videos available free to the public.
They sent a simple file to all of the companies that make computer-assisted translation tools, and they asked them to make videos of what it takes to translate the file in their program. Then TranslatorsTraining took the videos and removed all the sales language, so you can just focus on how each program works — and how easy or hard it is to use.

These videos are great for “comparison shopping” or just to see how the tool you use stacks up against the others. If you don’t use a CAT tool, you can take a look and see that they’re not scary.
